Bharat Sevashram Sangha · Toronto

A Legacy of Spirituality.
A Life of Service.

For more than half a century, BSS Toronto has been a spiritual home where worship, service, culture and community come together.

Our Spiritual Foundation

Spiritual growth through selfless service.

Bharat Sevashram Sangha was founded in India in 1917 by Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj.

Guru Maharaj envisioned a spiritual movement in which devotion and spiritual discipline were inseparable from service to others. His teachings inspired a tradition reaching beyond temple walls into education, humanitarian relief, healthcare, cultural preservation and assistance to those in need.

That spirit of seva — selfless service — continues to guide Bharat Sevashram Sangha around the world and here in Toronto.

Our Journey in Toronto

From Sunday satsangs in devotees’ homes to a growing spiritual and cultural campus, each chapter reflects the dedication of monks, devotees and supporters who carried the mission forward.

1974

A New Beginning in Canada

Swami Brahmanandaji came to Canada with the blessings and guidance of Swami Purnanandaji Maharaj. Having previously served as Principal of the Guyana Hindu College, he began building a spiritual community in Toronto. Sunday satsangs were first held in devotees’ homes and later at a chapel at the University of Toronto near Wellesley and Bay. Bharat Sevashram Sangha was formally incorporated in Canada that year.

1983

Our First Permanent Property

As the congregation grew, BSS acquired a storefront property at 196 Royal York Road, giving the community a spiritual home of its own.

1987

Continuing the Mission

Following the passing of Swami Brahmanandaji, devotees and supporters continued the spiritual and community work he had helped establish.

1989

A Home on Codlin Crescent

BSS acquired 2107 Codlin Crescent in Etobicoke, establishing a permanent home for the Sangha. For many years, it served as the temple and centre of BSS Toronto’s spiritual life.

2019

A New Chapter

The opening of the new Temple and Cultural Centre at 2105 Codlin Crescent created a larger space for worship, festivals, cultural activities and community gatherings.

Service to Humanity

Seva is something we live.

Service has been part of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha tradition since its beginning. At BSS Toronto, that spirit is expressed through hospitality, food and charitable assistance, community support and helping those experiencing difficult circumstances.

Our tradition has included food-bank contributions, donations of clothing and household necessities, visits to hospitals and care facilities, and other forms of assistance.

But seva is also found in everyday acts — preparing a meal, cleaning after a festival, visiting someone who is ill, helping another family, or simply giving time to serve the community.

Service is not separate from spiritual life. It is one of the ways spiritual values become visible in the world.
Honouring Our Past · Serving the Future

Our journey continues.

From the first Sunday gatherings in devotees’ homes in 1974, to Royal York Road, to the original temple at 2107 Codlin Crescent and the expanded campus of today, BSS Toronto has continued to grow while remaining rooted in its purpose.

Spirituality · Service · Culture · Community

To provide a place for spiritual practice. To preserve and share our traditions. To serve those in need. To welcome people into community. And to help future generations discover that spirituality is not simply something we observe — it is something we live.
